The Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball team clinched their fourth consecutive SCIAC championship Thursday night in the Hen House with a 61-60 win over cross street rivals Claremont-M-S. The Hens played with intensity from start to finish before a capacity audience knowing that the conference championship, as well as a first round automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship tournament was on the line. Junior Jeremiah Martin was in the zone posting a double-double scoring 33 points and pulling down 10 rebounds to lead the Hens both in offense and defense. With this year's SCIAC crown, Head Coach Charles Katciaficas' teams have won six of the last seven conference championships.
Pomona-Pitzer's men's basketball team (18-6) will play in the first round of the 48 team NCAA Division III Championships against Trinity University (23-2) in San Antonio, Texas this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The winner of Thursday's game will play McMurry University (25-1) of Abilene, Texas in the second round of the regional tournament Saturday in Abilene at 7:30 p.m. The Sagehens are making their 8th appearance in the NCAA Tournament after playing in 1986, 1989, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, and 1999.

2/23 Claremont-M-S def. P-P, 61-52
The Sagehen women hoopsters closed out their season with a loss to Claremont-M-S on Wednesday at Ducey Gym to finish 3rd in SCIAC. Maya Jones was the high scorer for the Hens with 10 points, while Jamie Guenthoer led in rebounds with 8. For the season, Meghan Gould led the Hens' offense with a 9.7 point average per game, followed by Sojourner Howe with 9.5. Guenthoer led the team with a total of 204 rebounds for the season averaging 8.2 rebounds per game while Gre'Juana Dennis reached the magical Pomona number of 47 for steals in the 1999-2000 season.

Pomona-Pitzer's men's baseball team lost three games over the weekend to Cal Lutheran. On Friday, the Hens lost by a score of 5-3 scoring all their runs in the bottom of the 7th inning. Brad Carmody hit a homerun to bring in Jose Cortez and Ryan Gould. In game two, Nick Bulaich scored a run in the 5th inning off a single by David Sawhill, and Brian Ferrette scored a run when Ray Pearl was walked. Game three ended with 7 hits for the Sagehens. In the top of the first inning Jorge Flores scored the Hens' first run while Sawhill added another run off a single by Matt Rager. The Hens host visiting Cal Sate Hayward on Tuesday. On Friday the baseball team travels to Redlands for a single game. Then Hens host the Bulldogs on Saturday in a double header.

2/21 PP vs. Caltech (rained out)
Bad weather caused the Hens' game against Caltech last Monday at Annandale to be rescheduled. This weekend the golf team will travel to La Jolla to play in the Southern California Intercollegiate Golf Championships. The tournament will take place at Torrey Pines.

In game one against Hope International, the contest was scoreless until the top of the 3rd inning when the Royals scored 1 run. The Hens pulled ahead in the bottom of the fourth adding 2 runs of their own. However, Hope International put the game out of reach with a big 5th inning posting 10 runs. Sagehen Jocelyn Burke was 1-2 with a double and 1 RBI. Pomona-Pitzer was ahead in game two (5-3) until the 7th inning when the Royals tallied 5 runs at their last up to bat. Hen Monica Archuleta hit a double and had 2 RBI's.
The Sagehens lost two away games to conference opponent Redlands on Saturday. Sharon Silveira was the top batter for the team going 2-4 hitting a single and double. The women's softball team hosts visiting Concordia University from Minnesota this Saturday on Wig Field.

Pomona-Pitzer's men's tennis team tallied two conference wins this past week over Occidental College on Friday and Cal Lutheran on Saturday. Coach Mike Jackson complimented his squad on a "great team effort" in their 5-2 win over Occidental. The Sagehens won the doubles points but lost at the #1 and #2 singles spots, both of which went to three sets. At #4 through #6, Samir Vora defeated Asman Khan (5-7, 6-2, 6-3), Sam Gaines defeated Eli Engle (6-0, 7-5), Nick Barlett toppled Jerry Chou (6-3, 6-3) and Mike Benroya came out on top against Peter Camus (7-6(8), 6-2, 8-6).
On Saturday against Cal Lutheran, the Sagehens swept every doubles and singles match. Chris Ross, playing at #1, got through a tough first set 7-6(9) before handily defeating his opponent Sonny Romero 6-2 in the second set. The men's tennis team will play La Verne in the morning and visiting Brigham Young University from Hawaii in the afternoon this Saturday.

The Sagehen women netters had an easy time Friday in their victory over Occidental College sweeping both the singles and doubles portions of the match. Sheree Schwartz and Anne Lindberg, playing together at the #2 doubles spot, hung tough to defeat Scumacher/Macharg in a heated battle, which ended with a final score of 9-7. The women's tennis team travels to Cal Lutheran on Friday to play the Regals. On Saturday the Hens host the La Verne Leopards.

2/26 PP at Carl Rossi Relays
On Saturday at the Carl Rossi Relays held at Claremont-M-S, senior Kate Hill threw 145'11" in the hammer and 117'2" in the discus while sophomore Sara Hastings pole vaulted 8'8". The Sagehens top distance medley team of Andrea Clemens, Rachel Throolin, Laura Bishop, and Anastasia Brewster set a school record of 12:46.02. The women's track and field team hosts a triangular meet on Saturday scoring against conference opponents Caltech and Redlands.

2/26 PP at Carl Rossi Relays
The Pomona-Pitzer men's track and field team competed last Saturday in the Carl Rossi Relays held at Claremont-M-S. Sagehen Dan Wire placed second in the javelin throwing 178'4" while senior Matt Campbell threw the hammer 164'6". Ephraim Ross set personal bests in the triple jump (44'1") and high jump (6'2"). The men's track and field team hosts a triangular meet on Saturday scoring against conference opponents Caltech and Redlands.
WOMEN'S WATER POLO Overall: 1-0 SCIAC: 1-0
2/25 PP def. Cal State San Bernardino, 14-8
The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team enjoyed a 14-8 victory over visiting Cal State San Bernardino on Friday night. After a closely fought first half, the Sagehens found themselves behind 5-4. The team then turned up the intensity in the second half and went on an impressive 7-0 run to solidify the win. Sophomore Joy Haviland led the scoring efforts for the Hens with 6 goals while Lucia Schmit posted 3 goals and Helane Crowell contributed 2 goals. The Sagehen water polo team hosts Michigan State and Biola this coming Sunday at Haldeman Pool.
