MEN'S BASEBALL Overall: 12-14-2 SCIAC: 3-9

The Sagehen baseball team added two wins and one loss to their SCIAC record this past weekend. On Friday against Redlands the Hens scored two runs in the 2nd inning to tie the Bulldogs 2-2. Redlands, however, started to pull away adding three more runs in the 3rd inning and one run in the 5th. The Hens answered back with 2 runs of their own in the 6th to remain close but the Bulldogs scored 2 runs in the 7th and 1 run in the 9th inning to seal the game. Luke Smude batted well and was 3-4 with two runs. In game two Pomona-Pitzer had 13 hits and scored runs in every inning except the 3rd and 8th for the lopsided 14-6 win. Left fielder Kevin Hickey had 3 hits, 5 RBI's and scored two runs.
In the third game of the series the Sagehens led off the first inning scoring 4 runs. They added six more runs in the sixth inning to lead 10-6. The Bulldogs tried to make a comeback in the 8th inning to pull within two but could not catch the Hens. David Sawhill was 3-3 with 1 RBI while Luke Smude was 3-5 with 4 RBI's. This week the Hens play Chapman University Tuesday at home in a double-header.

The Pomona-Pitzer golf team placed 9th out of a 15 team field at the Kingsmen Invitational held at Wood Ranch Country Club. Luc Schuster shot a 77 on the first eighteen holes and parred the second eighteen holes with a 72 to finish in second place overall out of 76 players. R.G. Manalac shot 159, Phil Hathaway 170, and Tim McEvoy 175 for the thirty-six hole tournament. Last Thursday the Hens lost to Cal Baptist by 20 strokes and to Point Loma by 10 strokes at Canyon Crest Country Club. Tim McEvoy led the Sagehens with an 82, followed by Luc Schuster (83), R.G. Manalac (84), Phil Hathaway (85), and David Cho (94).
On Thursday theSagehen golf team plays Caltech at Mountain Meadows and then hosts Cal Poly Pomona Monday at Red Hill Country Club.


WOMEN'S SOFTBALL Overall: 7-13 SCIAC: 4-4

The Sagehen softball team defeated the College of Notre Dame but lost two conference matches to Claremont-M-S last week. In the first game against the College of Notre Dame the Hens scored one run in the second and third innings and five in the 4th inning for the victory. Freshman pitcher Josina Morita earned the win for the Sagehens pitching all 7 innings, striking out 4 batters and allowing 3 earned runs. Sharon Silveira was the winning pitcher for game two against the Argonauts, striking out two and allowing 2 earned runs. Keeley Winn batted well for the Hens in game two hitting 2-3, with a double, 2 RBI's, and a stolen base.
The Hens lost a very close first game against Claremont-M-S which went to extra extra innings. The game remained scoreless after 3 innings until the Athenas scored one run in the 4th inning. Pomona-Pitzer then tied it up scoring a run in the 6th. Shannon Coggins doubled to left field and advanced to third off of Keeley Wynne's single. Coggins made it home on a failed attempt by the Athenas' catcher to throw out Wynne as she stole second base. Besides scoring a run, Coggins had an excellent day defensively with 6 put outs. Claremont-M-S ended up winning game one 2-1 in the 8th inning and the second game 4-0. The Hens have no contests scheduled this week but they will resume play at Hope International University on April 9th.

Last week Pomona-Pitzer's men's tennis team defeated three Pacific Northwest teams along with NCAA Div. III independent UC San Diego. Whitman College was the first to fall to the Hens. The Missionaries were ranked #20 preseason so the win was a good start to a very competitive week for the Hens. The #2 and #3 doubles teams of Bartlett/Saphier and Ross/Song won their matches by identical 8-6 scores to earn the double's point for the Sagehens. Ken Su (at #2 singles) won his match against Eric Bartee, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) and Dave Fern (at #3 singles) defeated Haroon Ullah 6-3,6-4. At #5 and #6 singles Nick Bartlett def. Curtis Hayne (6-1, 6-1) and Dylan Nachand (fresh from the basketball team) defeated Rick Smith (6-4, 6-2).
In a very tough match against Willamette the Hens lost the doubles point but came back to win four of the
six singles matches. Ken Su won his first set 7-5, lost the second set 2-6, and then turned the tables on his opponent to take the third set 6-2. Dave Fern won his match in a second set tie-breaker 6-2, 7-6 (3). On Saturday the Sagehens defeated #11th nationally ranked UC San Diego, 4-3. The Hen's #1 and #3 doubles teams triumphed in tie-breakers over their Titan opponents in two of the most competitive matches of the day. Fern/Su defeated Shabel/Zerboni 9-8 (6) while Song/Ross defeated Yeh/Boushey 9-8 (5). On Monday, in a contest that could have gone either way, the Hens completed their four match sweep beating Pacific Lutheran 5-2. Three of the Hens' singles matches were won in three sets each. At #5 Nick Barlett hung tough and persevered to beat Tyler Imig 6-2, 3-6, 7-6. The men's tennis team plays their last dual conference match against Redlands at home on Saturday. On Monday the Sagehens hosts NCAA Div. II opponent Sonoma State.

The Pomona-Pitzer women's tennis team had an easy time against Lewis & Clark from Portland Oregon. The Sagehens won all the singles matches in straight sets with the Pioneers taking only 12 games collectively off the Hens. In one of the more competitive matches, the #3 doubles team of Laura Scher and Courtney Chavez hung tough defeating Goodman/Barton 9-8. Thursday's match with UC Santa Cruz was rained out and will not be rescheduled. The Hens will host Pacific Lutheran Univerity on Wednesday, Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, and Trinity University on Sunday.




WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD Overall: 5-2 SCIAC: 5-2

Behind senior Larissa Yocom's 29.5 points in 8 events, Pomona-Pitzer's women's track and field team downed Redlands, 75-70 Friday at Redlands in the final SCIAC dual meet of the season. The Sagehens also defeated Whittier, but fell to Claremont-M-S. Pomona-Pitzer competes Saturday in the UC Riverside Invite.
Against Redlands, Yocom won the 400 (62.15), 400 hurdles (68.56), 100 hurdles (16.27), long jump (15'6 1/4), and triple jump (34'1 1/4), and got second in the 200 (28.05) along with competing on two relays. Junior Kate Hill threw a personal best 163'1 in the hammer to defeat Redlands' defending national champion. Along with giving the Sagehens important additional team points, Hill's mark is an automatic qualifier to the NCAA III National championships in late May. In addition, junior Anastasia Finnegan won the 800 (2:25.29), 1500 (4:56.72) and 3000 (11:07.19) along with anchoring the 4x400 team.

Pomona-Pitzer's men's track and field team defeated Redlands and Whittier Friday, but fell to Claremont-M-S in the final dual meet of the season at Redlands. The Sagehens compete Saturday at the Cerritos Invite.
Against all three teams, Greg Teplow won the javelin with a personal best (170'2), Matt Campbell (45'6 1/4) and Ari Polychronopolous (44'1 1/2) went 1-2 in the shot put, and Adam Boardman won the 5000m (16:07.0). Taking second places overall were Dan Wire in the javelin (169'7), Ephraim Ross in the triple jump (41'9 1/4), Campbell in the discus (141' 1 1/2), Ed Castellon in the hammer (162' 1/2), John Singleton in the steeplechase (10:24.10), Nick Franchini in the 110 hurdles (15.78) and 400 (51.86), Boardman in the 1500 (4:10.64), and Dreux Dillingham in the 100 (11.19) and 200 (22.24).
