WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY Overall: 6-1 SCIAC: 6-1

10/17 Second at SCIAC Multi-Dual Meets

Behind 1-2 individual finishes for juniors Anastasia Finnegan and Leah Barnes, Pomona-Pitzer's women's cross country team defeated six teams and fell to one Saturday at the Multi-Dual Meets at La Mirada Park. Claremont-M-S finished the day 7-0, followed by Pomona-Pitzer (6-1), Redlands (5-2), Occidental (4-3), Cal Lutheran (3-4), Whittier (2-5), Caltech (1-6), and La Verne (0-7).

Finnegan took the lead at the 1.5 mile mark and powered home the rest of the way to clock a personal best 19:19 over the 5000m (3.1 mile) course. Teammate Barnes finished second in 19:44 for the first-ever 1-2 Sagehen finish in the meet. The Sagehen depth was not enough to counter CMS' pack, which took places 4-5-6-7-9-10-11. CMS defeated Pomona-Pitzer in their dual meet, 26-33. Overall, 84 runners competed.

Behind Finnegan and Barnes for Pomona-Pitzer were frosh Vanessa Kettner (8th, 20:12), frosh Andrea Clemons (16th, 21:01), senior Marisela Aguilera (19th, 21:11), and frosh Sheila Ormond (22nd, 21:19).

Pomona-Pitzer does not compete this weekend, but runs the second SCIAC race Saturday, October 31 at Prado Park in Chino.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY Overall: 3-4 SCIAC: 3-4

10/17 Fifth at SCIAC Multi-Dual Meets

Sophomore Adam Boardman took second individually Saturday to lead the Sagehens in the SCIAC Multi-Dual Meets at La Mirada Park. Pomona-Pitzer defeated three teams but fell to four others. Claremont-M-S went 7-0 to lead all teams, followed by Whittier (6-1), Redlands (5-2), Occidental (4-3), Pomona-Pitzer (3-4), Caltech (2-5), Cal Lutheran (1-6), and La Verne (0-7).

Boardman clocked 26:42 over the 8000m (5 mile) course to finish second out of 86 runners. Following him the Pomona-Pitzer were Keith Ritchey (33rd, 28:59), Oscar Saunders (44th, 29:50), Casey Wilson (47th, 30:04), Adam Rick (48th, 30:09), Jake Oken-Berg (55th, 30:51), Michael Rostkowski (56th, 30:54), and Paul Snape (63rd, 31:29).

Pomona-Pitzer does not compete this weekend, but runs the second SCIAC race Saturday, October 31 at Prado Park in Chino.

WOMEN'S SOCCER Overall: 4-7-2 SCIAC: 3-5

10/14 win PP d. U.S. International University, 2-0
10/17 win PP d. Occidental, 4-0

Pomona-Pitzer's women's soccer team downed two opponents this week--the first win over non-conference U.S. International University, and the second victory over SCIAC foe Occidental. Pomona-Pitzer travels to Whittier Wednesday and hosts La Verne Saturday.

At home against USIU, the Sagehens scored a goal in each half. Anna Wolbach connected in the fourth minute of the game on a tap-in off a great pass from Emily MacRae. In the second half, Sarah Thalman found the net in the 82nd minute after a long run down the left side. Pomona-Pitzer had ten shots on goal to USIU's 24, but goalie Zelinda Welch had nine saves in the shutout.

At Occidental, the Sagehens blasted the Tigers by scoring all four goals in the first half. Anna Wolbach opened the scoring in the 8th minute, followed by goals from teammates Torrey Shelton (20th minute), Emily MacRae (26th minute), and Vanessa Parziale (31st minute). Goalie Welch faced only one shot in the game.

MEN'S SOCCER Overall: 6-6 SCIAC: 2-3

10/14 win PP d. Caltech, 5-0
10/17 win PP d. Occidental, 1-0 (OT)

Pomona-Pitzer's men's soccer squad tallied two conference wins last week over Caltech and Occidental--with the latter win a dramatic overtime victory. Pomona-Pitzer hosts Whittier Wednesday and travels to La Verne Saturday.

At Caltech, the Sagehens put the game out of reach early, as all five goals came in the first half. Jason Magee scored two goals--one at 7 minutes and the second at 23 minutes. Adding individual goals were Tim Kang (11th minute), Josh Fischer (35th minute), and Jason Dawson (38th minute). The Sagehens had 27 shots on goal, while limiting Caltech to zero.

At home against Occidental, both teams battled to a scoreless tie after regulation. But just two minutes into sudden death Dawson scored his second goal of the week to give Pomona-Pitzer the win.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL Overall: 10-5 SCIAC: 4-2

10/13 win PP d. Claremont-M-S, 9-15, 15-6, 15-17, 17-15, 16-14

Pomona-Pitzer's women's volleyball team edged cross-campus rival Claremont-M-S Tuesday in the team's only match of the week. The Sagehens host powerful Cal Lutheran Tuesday and Whittier Friday before traveling to Redlands Saturday.

In the unfriendly confines of CMS' Ducey Gym, the Sagehens dropped the first game but won the second. The next three games each went into extra points as the two teams battled for Sixth Street superiority. In the fourth game the Sagehens, down 2-1 in games, led 11-4 at one point but saw CMS score ten straight to lead 14-11--a mere point from clinching the match. Pomona-Pitzer dug deep and pulled out a win to send the game into a rally-scored fifth stanza. The Sagehens eked out a narrow win to send the predominantly pro-Athena crowd home disappointed. In her best match of the season, Lindsey Kasperowicz recorded 25 kills and tallied an attack percentage of .333 for the match.

MEN'S WATER POLO Overall: 7-11 SCIAC: 0-0

10/16-17 At Claremont Colleges Convergence: Boston College d. PP, 10-8; UC Santa Cruz d. PP, 11-8; PP d. Occidental, 10-5; PP d. Harvard, 9-5

Pomona-Pitzer's men's water polo team won two and lost two as the Sagehens hosted the Claremont Convergence along with CMS. Pomona-Pitzer opens SCIAC play this week with a home match against Occidental Wednesday.

Over the four-game weekend the Hens played stronger team offense and defense in each game. Pomona-Pitzer started out with a disappointing loss to Boston College Friday, but salvaged the first day with a solid but losing effort against UC Santa Cruz--which went on to win the 12-team tournament.

On Saturday the Occidental Tigers did not put up much resistance as the Hens coasted to an easy win. The game with Harvard started ugly when the Crimson took a 3-0 lead in the first period. A two-point shot by David Ratner and a penalty shot by Marc Cavagnolo got the Hens back in the game in the first quarter. Driving offense by Cavagnolo and Anuj Datta put Harvard in foul trouble and set the stage for a 4-0 burst of Pomona-Pitzer scoring in the fourth to finish the game with authority.

Senior Kirby Kim led a strong defensive effort in front of goalkeeper Cody Bitterlich, who blocked 12 Harvard shots.

MEN'S FOOTBALL Overall: 4-1

After a bye last weekend, the Sagehens resume play Saturday at Occidental under the lights. Pomona-Pitzer's leading statistical leaders include:

Rushing Jim Regan, 108 att, 454 yards, 4.2 Av/C, 90.8 Av/G, 2 TDs
Passing Tyren Sillanpaa, 36-82 att, 562 yards, 6 TDs, 3 int, 118.30 effic.
