WOMEN'S TENNIS Overall: 12-8 SCIAC: 8-2

5/6-12 Women's NCAA Championships

The Pomona-Pitzer's women's tennis team lost Tuesday in the first round of the NCAA/III Team Championships 8-1 to fourth seed Washington & Lee from Lexington, Virginia. The Sagehens then participated in a backdraw tournament defeating Mary Washington 7-2, UC San Diego 5-4, and Skidmore College 5-4 to finish in ninth place.

Seniors Christey Cooley and Claire Turchi teaming together in doubles lost to Kinoshita/Tarver of Rhodes College 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 in the first round of the doubles portion of the NCAA/III Championships. In singles, Turchi beat Adrianne Poole of Emory 6-2, 6-4 in the first round and Kirsten Erickson from Mary Washington 6-0, 6-1 in the second round to advance to the quarterfinals, where she lost to Caryn Cuthbert of Kenyon 5-7, 6-0, 6-3.

MEN'S TENNIS Overall: 11-11 SCIAC: 5-5

5/10 NCAA III West Regional

The Pomona-Pitzer men's tennis team lost in the first round of the NCAA Regionals which were held at UC Santa Cruz to UC San Diego 5-2. The Hens had a great opportunity to win the doubles point, but Nick Bartlett and Matt Desmarais lost in a tiebreaker at #3 doubles. Jesse Axtell and Kevin Carolan were the only two Sagehens to win in the single matches. This loss concludes the season for the Hens, who finished sixth in the Western Regional Tournament.

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD Overall: 6-1 SCIAC: 6-1

5/10 At Occidental Invitational

Pomona-Pitzer's men's track and field team sent a handful of individuals to the Occidental Invitational Saturday and came away with outstanding marks. Senior Nathan Busse ran a personal record 52.48 in the 400m hurdles to establish the #2 Pomona-Pitzer mark of all time. Senior Sylvain White triple jumped a personal record 49'1 1/2 for the #8 Pomona-Pitzer mark of all time. Both Busse's and White's mark lead the NCAA III--joining teammate Eric Davis (#1 in the 200 at 21.34) atop the national lists.

The NCAA III National meet will be Wednesday through Saturday, May 21-24 at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse.

5/10 At Occidental Invitational

Pomona-Pitzer's women's track and field team also sent a few individuals to the Occidental Invitational---with strong marks as well--in a final tune-up before Nationals. The NCAA III National meet will be Wednesday through Saturday, May 21-24 at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse.

Senior Stephanie Shideler ran 4:30.79 in the 1500 to break her own school record and personal best, while teammate Kiyomi Parish threw the hammer a season's best 186'6. Both Shideler and Parish lead the NCAA III National lists--Parish in the hammer, and Shideler in both the 800m (2:12.98) and 1500m.

Anastasia Finnegan ran a personal best 2:21.7 in the 800, Catherine Brown ran a personal best 4:57.1 in the 1500, and Julie Come ran a personal best 10:41.0 in the 3000. All three frosh recorded Pomona-Pitzer top ten all-time marks.

Sagehen sophomore infielder Mike Witzansky garnered First Team All-SCIAC honors.

WOMEN'S SOFTBALL Overall: 14-16 SCIAC:10-14

Senior pitcher Ayda Austin and junior outfielder Ranee Morales were named First Team All-SCIAC.

MEN'S WATER POLO

The American Water Polo Coaches Association released the Men's All-Academic team for the 1996-97 academic year. Pomona-Pitzer led the nation in the team honors with an overall 3.32 grade point average. Athletes elected to the All-Academic teams represent achievement on three levels; Excellent (3.20-3.40), Superior (3.41-3.70), and Outstanding (3.71-4.0). Nine Sagehens garnished All-Academic Team honors; Sascha Petersen and Philip Asquith (Outstanding), Steve Greene, Adam Marcy, Joshua Roth, Kirby Kim, Anju Datta (Superior), Benjamin Kimes and Andrew Lucas (Excellent).
