MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING Overall: 6-3 SCIAC: 4-1
2/20-2 Second at SCIAC Championships
"Fewer, faster, tougher" has been the year long motto of the Pomona-Pitzer men's swimming and diving team and this weekend proved once again how far a seven man swim team can stretch without breaking. CMS won every race in the swim finals and the Hens dominated the diving boards during the three day event. The big question was the scoring ability of the P-P swimmers in the 12 place scoring format of the championship meet against teams like Redands and Occidental, who each have much larger squads.
"Our men all swam to the top of their ability. Six of our seven placed in the top three of at least one event and all of our relays finished in the top three. Everyone had at least one personal best mark except Scott Swanson who is not going to taper and will rest until the national meet next month," said Coach Gary Troyer.
Pomona-Pitzer divers Matthew Smart and Andy Gill finished strong. With the big points scored by the divers (49 on the 3 meter board and 45 on the 1 meter) the Sagehens were able to keep their second place position in the conference. Top efforts for the swimmers included Andy Gansner's mile swim (16:59.59), Adam Nisenbaum's second place performance in the 100 free (:46.78) which qualified him for nationals, and Aaron Bruhl's 200 fly time (1:58.37). Other fine performances were turned in by Eric Salinger in the backstroke (1:59.70) and the 2/3 place finish of Leo Tanaka and Scott Swanson in the 100 breast at 1:01.2. The national qualifying marks by Bruhl in the 500 free, Nisenbaum in the 50 and 100 free and Scott Swanson in the 200 breast will extend their season into March.

MEN'S BASKETBALL Overall: 19-5 SCIAC: 12-1
2/19 win PP d. Cal Tech, 74-36
2/22 win PP d. La Verne, 76-69
The Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball team made it into the record books this week with an 11-1 SCIAC run, the best so far in the history of the men's basketball program. The 1988/89 team also only lost one conference game but played only a 10 game SCIAC schedule. The 1996-97 men's basketball squad continues to add to the Pomona-Pitzer historical records--- this season's present win/loss record at 19-5 ties the all time record for most games won in a single season.
Four Sagehens scored in double figures Wednesday against Cal Tech. Brett Lange led with 18 points while Jake Guadnola scored 11 and Travis Greer and Vaughan Wilson added 10 points each. The Hens led from start to finish against the Beavers and Coach Charles Katciaficas' bench saw plenty of playing time.
At home against La Verne last Saturday Pomona-Pitzer led 37-32 at the half-time break. Once again the balanced offense of the Hen squad made it impossible for the Leopards to key in one player. Both Brett Lange and Jake Guadnola scored 13 points each while Jason Lowery added 11 of his own and Erik Lund 10.
The Sagehens play their final second round SCIAC game this Wednesday away against CMS. The Hens have already clinched the conference championship and because of this the team will automatically receive a bid to the Division III/NCAA Championships.

Pomona-Pitzer's women's basketball team completes the second round of SCIAC play this week when they play CMS in a huge match-up Tuesday at home and then travel to La Verne for there last regular season game.
