MEN'S FOOTBALL Overall: 5-2
10/26 win PP d. Occidental, 35-7
Pomona-Pitzer's men's football team defeated Occidental Saturday in Eagle Rock. The Sagehen win was the second year in a row over the Tigers--the first back-to-back victories for The Drum since wins in 1956 and 1957 that concluded a six-game victory streak over Occidental.
The victory also assures Pomona-Pitzer of a winning season in 1996 that comes on the heels of 1995's 6-3 winning record. The back-to-back winning seasons are the first for Pomona-Pitzer since 1955 (7-1) and 1956 (4-3-1). Pomona-Pitzer does not play this Saturday, but concludes the season Saturday, November 9 against cross-campus rival Claremont-M-S at home on Merritt Field.
Against Occidental, the host Tigers scored first with 6:55 left in the second quarter, but Pomona-Pitzer answered back two minutes later when James Regan rushed in from eight yards out. His six points gave him 70 for the season, breaking the school record of 66 held by John Witham from 1954. Regan booted the PAT, and added four more PATs during the evening to stand at 75 points with one game remaining.
Steve Lecroy scored on a one-yard plunge with 21 seconds remaining in the half to give Pomona-Pitzer a 14-7 lead at the intermission. In the third quarter, quarterback rumbled 19 yards to score with 2:01 left, and then threw two TD passes in the final stanza: an 11-yarder to Ty Schultz and an eight-yarder to Raffi Avedian for the final margin of victory.
The Sagehens tallied 549 yards of total offense to Occidental's 312. Ramirez completed 21-35 passes for 274 yards passing. Regan rushed 16 times for a season-high 176 yards.
