N/A 9-16-00 win PP d. Colorado College, 55-36 The Pomona-Pitzer men’s
football team traveled to Colorado Springs this past weekend and came home a
winner over the Tigers from Colorado College. Once again, the Sagehens held their opponent to under 100 yards
rushing while eating up 226 yards on the ground themselves. Brian Ferrette had a busy
afternoon throwing the football, as he completed 22 of 35 passes for 251
yards and 3 touchdowns. Ferrette also
rushed the ball 5 times for 29 yards and a score. For the second week in a row, 9 different receivers for the
Sagehens got into the action. Leading
the charge for the Hens was sophomore tight end Benjamin LaCoss, who hauled
in 7 catches on the day for a total of 58 yards. Senior Matthew LaCoss also had a big day receiving the
football, as he grabbed 4 catches for 51 yards, and 2 touchdowns. Jeremy Lim also caught 4 balls for the
Sagehens, for a 44 yard total on the day.
James Nachtwey and Ryan Hernandez were each recipients of 2 passes on
the afternoon, with Hernandez catching one of those ball for a touchdown. Having a big day on the
ground was Jeremy Lim, who ran the ball a total of 26 times, netting 140
yards and 1 touchdown on the day.
Ryan Hattersley also got the call 9 times for the Hens, and was able
to net 58 yards and 1 touchdown as well.
Jonathan Samples was also able to punch one into the end zone with one
of his 5 carries. Pomona-Pitzer got off to
a big lead to start the contest, scoring 21 points in the first quarter
alone. That lead would temporarily
dwindle, as the Tigers closed to within 21-14 with just over 13 minutes to
play in the first half. The Hens
would then get back on track, however, with the touchdown run by Hattersley,
and a 20 yard interception for a touchdown by Daniel Wire. The fourth quarter provided a see-saw of
action as the Sagehens would score first to make it a 42-14 ballgame. Colorado College would then score 3
unanswered touchdowns to close within 6 points with 4 minutes to go. The Hens were up to the challenge,
however, as they would end the game scoring twice more within the final 2
minutes of play, the last of which was the touchdown run by Jonathan Samples. This weekend,
Pomona-Pitzer will play host to Lewis & Clark College. WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL Overall: 3-3 SCIAC:
0-0 9/15/00 loss Franklin & Marshall d. PP, 3-1 (16-14, 15-13, 12-15, 15-7) 9/16/00 win PP d. Schreiner College, 3-1 (15-12, 9-15, 15-12, 15-7) 9/16/00 loss UW Platteville d. PP, 3-0 (15-2, 15-9, 15-9) The Pomona-Pitzer
Volleyball team served as co-host for the Pacific Coast Tournament, and came
away with a win and 2 losses on the weekend.
On the first day of competition, the Hens took on the squad from
Franklin & Marshall. Despite the
team loss, a few Sagehens had some standout individual performances. Leading the offensive charge for the Hens
in that contest were Samantha Hauff and Alison Rindlaub, who each put down 16
kills. Also turning in solid
performance was Colleen Chrisco, who had 13 kills to go along with her 14
digs. Setter Erika Gamst served up 44
assists on the afternoon to go with her 12 digs. The following morning saw
the Hens come away with an impressive victory over Schreiner College,
3-1. Samantha Hauff, who hit .440 for
the tournament, again led the way for the Hens with team high 15 kills. Renee Faulkner also got into the action
with 13 kills on the match. Elizabeth
Katzer, Susan Caplow, Elena Shih, and Erika Gamst all came up with double
digit digs on the contest. Gamst also
contributed 29 assists. In the Sagehens third
contest of the tournament, Colleen Chrisco was the leading individual
performer with 9 kills and 6 digs on the afternoon. Erika Gamst had 20 assists to go along with her 6 digs. The Hens will next
play host to Whittier on the 19th of September. WOMEN’S SOCCER Overall: 3-2-1 SCIAC:
1-1 9/13/00 win PP d. CMS, 1-0 9/16/00 win Redlands d. PP, 5-2 The Sagehens began SCIAC
play this past week and split two games with CMS and Redlands. Against CMS, the only goal was scored in
the first half of action. The goal
was netted by Oriana Campanelli and assisted by Jo Kirsch. The goal by Campanelli came on her only
shot of the afternoon. The Hens were
able to get off 12 shots during the contest, while holding CMS to just
8. Ashley Thompson came up with 7
saves on the day for the Sagehens. The Hens’ second game of
last week came against a tough Redlands team. Pomona-Pitzer would go into halftime only down one goal at 3-2,
but Redlands would come out in the second frame and net two more to put the
contest out of reach, despite being outshot by the Sagehens, 12-11. Scoring the goals for the Hens were Torrey
Shelton and Rebecca Hummel. Ashley
Thompson would again coral 7 saves on the day. The Sagehens will next
play host to Cal Lutheran on Wednesday the 20th. MEN’S SOCCER Overall: 2-3 SCIAC:
1-0 9/13/00 loss Chapman d. PP, 3-1 9/16/00 win PP d. Redlands, 2-1 The Sagehen men competed
twice this past week, the second of which was a successful SCIAC opener. In the loss to Chapman, the Hens were able
to outshoot the Panthers 11-5, but only one of those shots would find the
back of the net. Ian Preikschat was able
to get the Hens on the board in the 77th minute on a penalty kick, but it proved
to be too little, too late, as Chapman would leave with a 3-1 victory. Nick Zabriskie came up with 2 saves on the
afternoon. Against the squad from
Redlands, the Hens would experience more success. A hard fought contest ended with the Hens starting their
conference play with a victory, and handing Redlands its first defeat of the
season. Netza Bravo and Ian
Preikschat provided the offense for the Hens, who were able to fire off 13
shots on the day. Assisting on both
goals for the Sagehens was Sean Daugherty.
Nick Zabriskie and Jay Schneider split time in net for the Hens. Zabriskie made 3 saves for the Hens, while
Schneider made 1. The men’s soccer team
will next travel to Cal Lutheran on the 20th. MEN’S WATER POLO Overall: 2-6 SCIAC:
0-0 9/16/00 win PP d. Chapman, 0-9 9/16/00 loss UC Santa Cruz d. PP, 11-5 9/17/00 loss MIT d. PP, 10-7 9/17/00 win PP d. Chaminade, 15-13 (double OT) The Sagehens were able to
manage two important WWPA wins over the weekend over Chapman and Chaminade,
but lost two games that the team needed to win in order to move up in the
rankings. Ryan Williams and Ben
Speicher led the team in scoring at the Inland Empire Classic. Marc Cavagnolo was the assist leader and
his aggressive playmaking and driving skills led to a team record in man up
situations. Head Coach Gary Troyer
remarked, “Our transition and half court offense is beginning to take shape
but we are very far behind in the development of our counter attack defense
and 6 on 5 play. We have a week
without a big game commitment and we should be able to improve those areas
before the Air Force game.” The Hens will next
compete at the Cal Baptist Tournament this coming weekend. MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Overall: 0-0 SCIAC:

team was off this past week and will next compete at the UC Riverside
