MEN’S FOOTBALL             Overall:  4-0   SCIAC: N/A

10/07/00          win                   PP d. La Verne            22-2

The Sagehens from Pomona-Pitzer traveled to La Vern this past weekend and beat the host Leopards for the first time in 18 years.  For the fourth time in as many games, the Hens held their opponent to under 100 yards rushing.  In fact, the squad from La Verne was only able to net 33 yards this past Saturday.  On the year, the Sagehens are holding the opposition to just 40 yards a game and only 1.4 yards per carry.  The Hens had 21 tackles for a loss against La Verne.

The Hens got the majority of their offense on the ground as the team rushed for 141 yards.  Ryan Hattersley led the charge on the ground with 78 yards on 23 carries and one touchdown.  Jonathan Samples also contributed by carrying the ball 7 times for 36 yards and a touchdown.  Teohua Sanchez, who came in to the game at quarterback in the first quarter to replace the injured Brian Ferrette, also carried the ball 7 times.  Sanchez, like Samples and Hattersley, was also able to take one of his carries into the end zone.

The Hens put the ball in the air just 16 times, and completed 6 of those attempts.  Sanchez was 5 of 10 passing on the day.  Matthew LaCoss and Ryan Hattersley each caught two passes on the day, for 22 and 15 yards, respectively.  Jonathan Samples and Benjamin LaCoss hauled in the other two completions on the afternoon.

La Verne actually got on the board first in this one with a safety in the first quarter.  That would be the only time the Leos saw the end zone, however.  Hattersley would then get the Hens on the board with his 6 yard touchdown run with 3 minutes to go in the first.  The two point conversion was no good and so the score was 6-2, and that is how it would remain going into halftime as the two teams traded punts in the second quarter.  The Hens would then come back out onto the field and do the remainder of their scoring in the third quarter.  The  touchdowns by Sanchez and Samples along with a field goal by Eric Nielson would put the game out of reach.

The Sagehens will next travel to the University of Puget Sound on Saturday the 14th.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL             Overall:  7-6   SCIAC: 3-3

            10/03/00          win       PP d. Occidental, 3-1 (13-15, 15-9, 15-11, 15-12)

            10/06/00          loss      CMS d. PP, 3-1 ( 15-8, 11-15, 15-7, 15-8)

            10/07/00          win       PP d. Penn State Behrend, 3-1 (13-15, 15-8, 15-13, 15-12)

            10/07/00          win       PP d. Caltech, 3-0 (15-1, 15-12, 15-5)

The women’s volleyball team had a busy week, playing in four contests.  Three of the four contests were SCIAC matches, and the Hens were able to take two of those, and three of four matches in all.

Against Occidental, the Hens got a big win and some big performances on the evening to earn that win.  Colleen Chrisco collected 15 kills to go along with her 14 digs on the night.  Alison Rindlaub also had a great night with 14 kills and an incredible 23 digs.  Sam Hauff and Jessie Franzetti each added 12 kills on the night as well.  Susan Caplow contributed defensively with 11 digs on the night as well.  Erika Gamst served up 40 assists on the night.

The Hens would then walk around the corner to take on the Athenas from CMS.  The Hens lost a tough 4 set match on the road.  Rindlaub led the Hens offensively on the night with 10 kills.  Vicenta Arrizon had 8 kills on the match.  Defensively, Patty Van Kuran led the team with 12 digs.  Gamst had 21 assists on the evening.

A day after the loss to CMS, the Hens would need to regroup as they were to play two matches in one day at home versus Penn State Behrend and the team from Caltech.  Apparently, the Sagehens recovered nicely, as they came up with two wins on the day.  In the first game against Penn St. Behrend, three Hens would come up with double digit kills on the match.  Jessie Franzetti led the way with 13 kills and Sam Hauff and Alison Rindlaub each collected 12.  Rindlaub also dug up 13 balls on the match.  Susan Caplow and Elena Shih also contributed defensively with 14 and 13 digs, respectively.  Gamst assisted on 41 kills on the day.

The Hens would just gather speed as they then took on Caltech in a match that lasted under an hour.  Sam Hauff had 10 kills and 7 digs to lead the way for the Hens.  Erika Gamst came up with 20 assists on the match.

The Hens will next play host to Cal Lutheran before traveling to Illinois to play a tourney at Benedictine.

WOMEN’S SOCCER                       Overall:  6-5-1            SCIAC: 4-3

            10/04/00          loss      La Verne d. PP, 1-2

            10/07/00          win       PP d. CMS, 2-0

The women’s soccer team split two conferences games this past week, dropping a contest to La Verne and defeating the team from CMS.

The Hens played a close game with La Verne but were upended in the 76th minute with the games’ final goal.  For the Hens, Lauren Salvail scored in the 64th minute on a goal assisted by Torrey Shelton.  Ashley Thompson came up with 3 saves in net for the Sagehens.

After the tough loss to La Verne, the Sagehens came back and had a big win over rival CMS.  Rebecca Hummel got scoring started with a free kick goal in the 21st minute.  Lauren Salvail would then come through once more on a goal to clinch the game.  Salvail, who scored a goal in each of the past two games, has scored a total of 5 goals in the past 4 games combined.  In that same time, she has also assisted on two goals for the Sagehens.  Against CMS, Ashley Thompson made 5 stops between the posts.

The Hens have a busy week as they will next host Redlands on the 11th before traveling north.

MEN’S SOCCER                  Overall:  7-4   SCIAC: 6-1

            10/04/00          win       PP d. La Verne, 3-0

            10/07/00          win       PP d. CMS, 3-1

The men’s soccer squad came up with two more big SCIAC wins this past week to up their conference record to 6-1, good enough for a first place tie in the conference.

The Hens hosted La Verne on the 4th and got a big game from Jason Magee as he scored two of the Hens’ 3 goals on the day, one in each half of play.  The third goal was scored by Andrew Watkins.  Todd Samuelson and Netza Bravo provided assists on the afternoon.  In the game, the Sagehens outshot the opposition 22-3.

Against CMS, the Hens got out to an early lead in the game on goals in the 3rd and 14th minutes of play.  Ian Preikschat and Sean Daugherty scored the first two goals of the game.  Daugherty’s goal, the second goal of the game, was assisted by Joe Amick.  CMS got the game to within one on a goal in the 84th minute of play, but frosh Mario Velez came back 4 minutes later to put the game out of reach on a goal assisted by Preikschat.  Nick Zabriskie came up with 8 saves in net for the Hens on the afternoon.

The Sagehens will begin the second round of SCIAC competition as they will travel to Redlands on the 11th.

MEN’S WATER POLO                    Overall:  2-8   SCIAC: 0-0

            10/09/00          loss      Loyola Marymount d. PP, 17-7

The Hens were sunk by the Lions of Loyola on Saturday in a lopsided contest that featured 10 counter attack goals by the victors.  On the game, Coach Gary Troyer noted, “When we play against this type of opponent, every offensive mistake on our part results in trouble on the transition.  Our overall team speed is very slow and that means that our opponent is a man up on every turnover.”

Ryan Williams led the Pomona-Pitzer scoring with 3 and Marc Cavagnolo contributed 3 assists.

This coming weekend, Pomona-Pitzer and CMS host the 8th annual Convergence Tournament with 15 teams playing in 30 games on Friday and Saturday.  On Friday, the Hens are scheduled to host Santa Clara at noon and Boston College at 7:30 PM.  On Saturday, the Hens will play Iona College.

10/6-8/00         ITA Regional Tourney

The Sagehens competed in the ITA Regional Tournament this past weekend hosted by CMS and a doubles team from Pomona-Pitzer won the tournament.  Even more remarkable than the victory, the winning duo are a pair of first year students.  Kelly Howard and Whitney Henderson won 4 matches to win the tourney and along the way upset the number one seeded team from CMS.  This victory means that the pair will be named All-Americans.  As a result of this win, the pair is automatically invited to compete in the National ITA tourney held in Memphis, TN.  There, the Hen duo will compete against winners from the other 7 regional tournaments held around the country.

Another frosh duo for the Hens, Betsy Marks and Chelsea Heller, made it to the semi-finals.
