National Girls and Women in Sports Day 2009

TENTH ANNUAL

NATIONAL GIRLS AND WOMEN IN SPORT DAY
 January 31st, 2009

sponsored by Pomona and Pitzer Colleges’ Athletics and the Office of Community & Multicultural Programs’ Pomona Partners

National Girls and Women in Sport Day began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic Volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure recognition for past and current sport achievements, to promote the positive influence of sports participation, and to support access for women in sports.

Each year in February, thousands of sports educators, coaches, athletic directors, recreation directors, students and parents across the country show their support of the Day by organizing and sponsoring various events.  The National Girls and Women in Sport Coalition are responsible for organizing the national NGWSD. The Coalition combines the experience and resources of the five premiere girls- and women-serving organizations in the United States: Girl Scouts of the USA, Girls Incorporated, the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, National Women's Law Center, and the Women's Sports Foundation.

Pomona and Pitzer Athletics and the Office of Community & Multicultural Programs’ Pomona Partners have joined forces in planning a fun and educational event for Saturday, January 31st, 2009.  Student-athletes, administrators and faculty from Pomona and Pitzer Colleges, and Pomona Partners staff and student liaisons will host the event.

Pomona Partners is a Pomona College community outreach program servicing Fremont Middle School in the Pomona Unified School District.  Pomona College students who conduct mentoring and enrichment activities lead the weekly program. Each semester Fremont students participate in field trips including trail clearing at Mount Baldy and they also visit Pomona College for planned enrichment activities such as NGWS Day.

Approximately 100 students from Fremont Middle School in Pomona and Serrano Middle School in Montclair will participate in the January 31st sport day activities.  The theme for this year’s event is “Look Who’s Playing!" —and it will be a day to celebrate all who play and the many opportunities to play for a lifetime.

This year’s special guest speaker will be Caryn “Cranny” Cranston, a 1992 graduate of Pitzer College and a Pomona-Pitzer Athletic Hall of Famer.  Coach Cranston, who currently serves as a Head Tennis Professional at the Los Gatos Tennis Academy, will also conduct a cardio tennis clinic.

The day will include warm-up games and four instructional clinics (P-P student athletes and staff serve as organizers and clinicians) in cardio tennis, volleyball, lacrosse and playground games.  The day will conclude with lunch at the softball field  (just in time to watch Pomona-Pitzer compete against Patten University) and time to socialize.  All participants will receive a t-shirt, poster, certificate and a photo collage.
