Football                                                          0-2 Overall 
Pomona-Pitzer fell to 0-2 on the young season with a 66-14 setback at 6th ranked Trinity University (TX).  The Hens were held to just 7 first downs in the game while the host team tallied 24 new sets of downs.  Trinity racked up 505 yards of total offense, holding the Hens to 170, 129 of which came on the ground. 
Jon Samples led the ground charge for the Hens, getting the call 8 times for 54 yards, including a 34 yard touchdown scamper.  Jon Anderson and Ken Clark were next in line for the Hens with 11 carries apiece, gaining 34 and 33 yards, respectively.  At the quarterback position, Anderson threw the ball 14 times and found a receiver 4 times for a total of 41 yards.  Jeremey Lim brought in 3 of those 4 receptions for 37 yards on the night. 
Defensively for Pomona-Pitzer, Jonathan Green had 9 total tackles while Matthew Waldeck worked for 8 of his own.

The Sagehens got the 2002 campaign underway with a tough 17-16 loss at La Verne.  The Hens had a 16-7 lead with under 3 minutes to play but the Leos tallied the game's final 10 points in the final minutes and kicked the game winning field goal with 11 seconds to play. 
For the Hens, quarterback Felipe Aguilar completed 6 of 15 passes for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Aguilar found 6 different receivers for his 6 completions, the longest of which went to Matthew Hermsen for 45 yards.  Catching the touchdown passes from Aguilar were Andrew Vie and Andrew Ackerman.  Leading the Hens on the ground was Jon Samples as he carried the ball 17 times, gaining 94 yards.  Jeremy Lim got the call 12 times and tallied 28 yards on the afternoon.
Defensively for Pomona-Pitzer, Marcel Demaree led the way with 10.5 tackles while Bobby Boeche and Jonathan Green each had 10 tackles and a sack.  


Men's Soccer                      3-2 Overall       1-0 SCIAC
Pomona-Pitzer opened up SCIAC play with a bang as they tallied 11 goals in a win at Whittier.  Eight different Sagehens found the back of the net on the afternoon.  Matt Lee-Ashley, Ryan Takeshita, and Doug Bernstein all scored twice in the lopsided affair.  Jay Schneider corralled 5 saves in net for the Hens. 

The Hens hosted Rutgers-Camden and dominated the visiting squad, 4-0.  Pomona-Pitzer found the back of the net twice each half in running away with the win.  Matt Lee-Ashley led the way offensively for the Hens with 2 goals on the day.  His two goals were sandwiched in between goals by Wyatt Wells and Netza Bravo.  Joe Amick had an assist in the game and Aaron Mohan assisted on both of Lee-Ashley's goals.  Jay Schneider was not contested between the posts as the Hens surrendered just 3 shots all game.

Pomona-Pitzer played host to Vanguard on the 11th and fell to the Lions by the score of 4-1.  The Hens went into halftime down just 1-0 but the visiting squad put 3 goals on the board in the second frame to pull away.  Matt Lee-Ashley tallied the lone goal for the Hens off of an assist from Aaron Mohan.  Jay Schneider made 6 saves between the posts for the Hens.

The Hen soccer squad won their first game of the young season over visiting Webster University.  Pomona-Pitzer won the game 1-0 on a first half goal off the head of Ryan Takeshida.  Alex Pickrell provided the crossing pass for that goal, the only one of the game.  Although the score was close, the Hens dominated play on the field, limiting the opponent to 2 shots while getting off 15 of their own.

The Sagehens opened up their 2002 campaign with a 2-1 road loss at Division II U.C. San Diego.  Matt Lee-Ashley put the Hens up 1-0 on a first half goal, but the tough Triton team scored twice in the second half of action to walk away with the win.  Keeper Jay Schneider made 6 saves for the Hens, playing all 90 minutes.


Volleyball                            3-5 Overall         0-0 SCIAC
On the final day of the Pacific Coast Classic, the Hens split two more contests, defeating Mills and losing to Williams.  The Hens made quick work of Mills with 33 kills and 12 service aces in the 3 game sweep.  Against Williams, both Colleen Chrisco and Vicenta Arrizon had 15 kills while Renee Faulkner came up with 10 of her own.  On the defensive side of the ball, Liz Shatzer led the Hens with 17 digs in the 4 game match.  Jeannie Kenmotsu dished out 36 assists in the contest.  Vicenta Arrizon was named an All-Tournament selection at the end of the weekend.  Over the 4 match tournament, she had 32 kills and 29 digs.

The Hens fell to Willamette in their 2nd match of the Pacific Coast Classic.  Pomona-Pitzer won the first game 30-20 but then lost the next 3 as Willamette pulled away.  Susan Caplow and Jessica Rybka led the Hens with 10 kills apiece while Vicenta Arrizon led defensively with 13 digs in the 4 games of action.

Pomona-Pitzer defeated Augsburg 3 games to none in the first contest of the Pacific Coast Tournament, hosted by both Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-M-S.  Vicenta Arrizon led the way for the Hens with 11 kills on the afternoon.  Susan Caplow was next in line with 8 kills.  Defensively, Katherine Hopkins led the Hen effort with 10 digs in the match.  Jeannie Kenmotsu dished out 31 of the Hens' 35 assists.

The Sagehens took to the court for the first time this season at the Whittier Invitational.  Pomona-Pitzer went 1-3 on the weekend, dropping matches to U.C. Santa Cruz, C.S. Hayward, and Whitman.  The Hens defeated host Whittier for the lone win of the two day event.  Renee Faulkner and Colleen Chrisco led the Hens offensively over the 4 games with 37 and 36 kills, respectively.  Jeannie Kenmotsu dished out 84 assists on the weekend.  Defensively, Colleen Chrisco led the Pomona-Pitzer effort with 39 digs, while Liz Shatzer and Jeannie Kenmotsu came up with 33 and 30, respectively. 


Women's Soccer              1-6 Overall         0-1 SCIAC
The Sagehens fell at home to Whittier to open the SCIAC portion of their season.  Pomona-Pitzer was outscored by 2 to 1 each half to end up with the 4-2 defeat.  Frosh Anna Renery scored both goals in the game for the Hens.  Becca Hummel and Aliza Norwood assisted on the goals by Renery.  The game was tied at 2 with just under 30 minutes to go, but the Poets scored 2 unanswered goals to pull away. 

Pomona-Pitzer travelled to Concordia and fell to the home squad by the score of 9-0.  The Hens were able to get off 8 shots but none found the back of the net.  Three different Hens split time between the posts for Pomona-Pitzer.

The Hens were edged by Simspon College on the 14th, 2-1.  Frosh Anna Renery tallied her first collegiate goal in the first half to tie the game for the Hens, but the home team gave up the go ahead goal in the 60th minute.  Sarah Staller assisted on the Renery goal.  The game was evenly played as both teams got off 14 shots on goal.  

Pomona-Pitzer fell at home to The Master's on the 11th, 5-1.  Caitlin Barrett got the Hens on the board first with a goal in the 30th minute but the visiting squad tallied 5 unanswered goals the rest of the way.  Four of those goals came in the 2nd half.  Sarah Staller assisted the goal by Barrett.

The Hens lost 2-1 at Hope International on the 6th of September.  Sarah Staller tallied the lone Pomona-Pitzer goal on the day on one of the Hens' 12 shots.  Goalkeeper Allison Mathes made 7 saves on the afternoon, playing all 90 minutes. 

The Sagehens played host to the tough Banana Slug team from U.C. Santa Cruz and fell to the visiting squad, 4-0.  The Hens had some good chances in the first half of play but were unable to capitalize.  The Slugs went into the second half up 1-0 but tallied 3 goals in less than 10 minutes to seal the victory over the Hens.

The Hens were the first Pomona-Pitzer team to compete this year and they did so in winning fashion.  The Sagehens played host to Fontbonne of Missouri and defeated the Griffins by the score of 1-0.  Sarah Staller tallied the lone goal of the day in the first half and the Hens held on the rest of they way for the victory. 


Men's Water Polo               2-7 Overall       0-0 SCIAC
The Hens played two games on the 21st at Cal Baptist and came up short in both contests.  In the first game of the day, Pomona-Pitzer was edged by Chapman, 8-7.  Later in the day, the Hens fell to Riverside Community College by the count of 8-2.  Glenn Anderson led the Hens with 3 goals in the two games while Ben Speicher had two of his own.  Carlo Diy made 7 saves in each of the two games.  Andrew Shetterly had 4 steals and 2 assists in the tough loss to Chapman.

Pomona-Pitzer participated in the Inland Empire Classic over the weekend and split their 4 games.  The Hens were victorious over Cal Maritime and Caltech, but came up short to U.C. Santa Cruz and Santa Clara.  On the 4-game weekend, Ben Speicher accounted for 11 of the Hens' 35 goal total, with his best offensive output coming in a tough sudden death loss to Santa Clara.  Carlo Diy made 26 saves in net over the weekend, including 10 against Santa Clara.

The Hens played host to a tough Chaminade team on the 11th and fell by the score of 18-6.  Ben Speicher led the Hen effort with 3 goals, while Glenn Anderson tallied 2 of his own.  Eric Kort also found the back of the net for Pomona-Pitzer.

Pomona-Pitzer kicked off the 2002 season at the Triton Invitational at U.C. San Diego.  The Hens were defeated on the 8th by Redlands (12-2) and La Verne (12-7).  Ben Speicher tallied 5 of the Hens' 9 goals over the 2 games.  Glenn Anderson chipped in with 2 goals of his own in the La Verne game.  Rafael Diy made 11 saves in net on the day with 7 of those coming against La Verne.


Women's Cross Country 0-0 Overall       0-0 SCIAC
Senior Laura Bishop pulled away in the third mile to win the inidividual crown in the second race at the UC Riverside Invitational Saturday. Bishop clocked 18:57 over the 5000m (3.1 mile) course to give Pomona-Pitzer its first individual victory ever in 15 years racing at the UCR meet. With 129 points, the Sagehens finished fifth out of 14 teams. Following Bishop for Pomona-Pitzer were frosh Amy Rapp (15th, 20:08), frosh Nika Strzelecka (27th, 20:30), sophomore Ann Prouty (42nd, 20:58), and junior Susie Roley (47th, 21:08). A total of 147 women competed. The top seven Pomona-Pitzer runners will compete this Saturday at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto over a 6000m distance.

Behind frosh Amy Rapp (17th place) and Nika Strezelecka (31st), Pomona-Pitzer's women's cross country team took 7th out of 12 teams at the Aztec Invitational Open Race Saturday at Balboa Park in San Diego. Rapp clocked 20:28, and Strezelecka ran 21:02, while teammates Susie Roley (39th, 21:30), Heather Callahan (42nd, 21:32), and Ann Prouty (47th, 21:43) rounded out the top five. Senior Laura Bishop ran in the Invitational Race against some demanding Division I competition and finished 21st out of 61 runners in 19:13.


Men's Cross Country        0-0 Overall       0-0 SCIAC
Frosh Crosby Freeman paced the Pomona-Pitzer men's cross country team to a 17th place finish out of 29 teams Saturday at the UC Riverside Invitational. Freeman ran 26:39 over the 8000m (5 mile) course to finish 69th. Behind Freeman for Pomona-Pitzer were junior Nate DeFelice (92nd, 27:03), frosh Chris Dubois (107th, 27:17), Braden Boice (175th, 28:20) and Dan Shickich (188th, 28:36). A total of 281 runners competed. Pomona-Pitzer next competes Saturday at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto.
