The Sagehens wrapped up their 2001 campaign with a tough
28-16 defeat at the hands of rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The
Hens got on the board first in the game thanks to a 20 yard run from
Matt LaCoss, but Pomona-Pitzer then gave up 14 unanswered points before
adding a field goal just before the end of the first half of play.
The Stags came out of the locker room to score two touchdowns early in the third period of
play to take a 28-10 lead. The Hens' Matt LaCoss came back to throw a TD pass to Jeremy Lim
with 4 minutes remaining in the third quarter to bring the score
to 28-16, where it would remain throughout the entire final stanza of action.
On the day, Matt LaCoss led the team in yards rushing with 128 yards
on 22 attempts. Jon Samples also had a great day running the football,
tallying 125 yards on just 11 carries. LaCoss was the only quarterback
who saw action in the game, and he ended the game completing 10 of 26 passes
for 118 yards. James Nachtwey was the favorite receiving target on the
afternoon with 4 catches totalling 44 yards. Lim caught 3 balls on the day for
35 yards.
Defensively, Jonathan Chock led the charge for the Hens with 13 total
tackles on the day. Raudric Curtis, Joshua Meier, and Micah Pueschel all
had 10 tackles on the afternoon. Joseph Cappola came up with an interception
and Bobby Boeche recovered a fumble for the Sagehens' Defense.

Women's
Volleyball 3-20 Overall 3-11 SCIAC

|
The Pomona-Pitzer squad finished their season on the road with
a 3 games to none defeat at the hands of Cal Lutheran. Renee
Faulkner and Vicenta Arrizon led the team offensively
with 10 and 9 kills, respectively. Jeannie
Kenmotsu dished out 16 assists and Arrizon led the squad
with15 digs on the night.
The Sagehens traveled to Redlands to take on the
Bulldogs on the 30th and fell to the host team by 3
games to 1. Vicenta Arrizon and Renee Faulkner led
the Hens offensively, with 12 and 10 kills,
respectively. Jeanne Kenmotsu led the Hens with 16
assists, and Alysha Lascano added 13 of her own.
Colleen Chrisco and Elena Shih each dug up 22 balls for
Pomona-Pitzer on the night.

Men's
Soccer 13-6 Overall 11-3 SCIAC
|
|
|
Pomona-Pitzer wrapped up its 2001 season with a 5-1 victory
on the road at Whittier. The Hens closed the season by
winning 11 of their last 12 games. In the game at
Whittier, Scott Coleman was the main offensive spark, as he
found the back of the net 3 times on the afternoon.
Joe Amick and Matt Lee-Ashley each added a goal as well to
help the Hens cruise on to a convincing win.
Goalkeeper Jay Schneider made 5 saves in net for the
Sagehens.
The Hen men hosted the Leopards of La Verne on the 31st of
October and came away with a 3-1 win. The Hens got on
the board twice in the first 20 minutes of action with goals
by Mario Velez and Matt Lee-Ashley. Velez added his
second goal of the day early in the second half to give the
Hens a 3-0 lead. The Leopards tallied a goal of their
own in the 78th minute but it was not enough to overcome the
Hens.

Cross Country 6-1 Overall

|
Pomona-Pitzer's men's cross country team scored 189 points
to finish in 7th place Saturday November 10th at the NCAA
III West Region meet in Salem, Oregon. The Sagehens were
paced by sophomore Nate DeFelice, who finished 23rd in a
personal best 26:06.
Behind DeFelice for the Sagehens were frosh Braden Boice
(30th, 26:36), senior Paul Snape (43rd, 27:26), frosh David
Marshall (55th, 28:00), and sophomore Andy Barnett (61st,

Women's
Cross Country 5-2 Overall

|
Junior Laura Bishop placed a strong second Saturday November
10th at the NCAA III West Region meet to earn a berth to the
Division III National Championships Saturday the 17th in
Rock Island, Illinois. Bishop clocked a sparkling 17:59 over
the 5000m course in Bush Park, Salem, Oregon to nab an
individual Nationals berth for the first time.
Bishop's place equals the highest finish ever for a
Pomona-Pitzer woman at the Regional meet. The women's team
garnered five personal bests Saturday to finish 7th out of
11 scoring teams. The squad's top five cumulative time of
1:36:57 is the third fastest in school history.
Behind Bishop for Pomona-Pitzer were two other All-Region
performances: soph Stefanie McDougall finished 18th in
18:58, and soph Heather Callahan finished 30th in 19:24.
Erin Wagner (54th, 20:06), Alexandra Borst (65th, 20:30),
and Ann Prouty (69th, 20:55) rounded out the Sagehen top

Water Polo

The Hens hosted the SCIAC championship tournament over the weekend of
the 10th and 11th of November and came away with a 5th place
finish. The Hens fell in the first round to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
by the tight score of 6-5. Ben Speicher led the Hens with 4 goals
in the game. Luke Johnson scored the other goal for the Sagehens.
Jamie Love made 11 saves in net for the Hens.
Day 2 of the tournament saw the Hens take on and defeat both Occidental
and Caltech. Against Caltech, Andrew Shetterly led the team with 3
goals while Benjamin Blum, Ben Speicher, and Eric Kort all had 2 goals
apiece. Eric Forburger made 7 saves in goal for the Hens.
Against Occidental, the Sagehens needed overtime to dispatch of the
Tigers, 5-4. Ben Komer led the Hens with 2 goals in the game and
Jamie Love made 7 saves in net to help the Hens to a 5th place SCIAC
finish.
The Hen squad walked across 6th street to take on the Stags of
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the 3rd of November and fell to the host team by
the score of 16-5. Ben Speicher was the only Hen able to score as he was
responsible for all of the Pomona-Pitzer goals. Goalkeeper Jamie
Love made 6 saves in net for the Sagehens.
The Sagehens traveled to Eagle Rock to take on the Tigers of
Occidental on the 1st of November and came away 13-11
winners. The Hens were down by 2 goals heading into
the fourth quarter but outscored the host team 5-1 in the
final stanza to claim the victory. Ben Speicher again
led the Sagehen offensive effort with 6 goals on the
day. Ryan Meckel-Parker was next in line for the Hens
with 4 goals. Jamie Love made 8 saves in the net for
the Sagehens.
The Sagehens played host to the Panthers of Chapman at
Haldeman Pool and fell to the visiting squad by the score of
9-7. A late rally came up just short as Pomona-Pitzer
came from 6 goals down to tighten the gap with goals by Ben
Speicher (4), Eric Kort (2), and Luis Lopez (1). Jamie
Love made 11 saves in net for the Sagehens.

Swimming and Diving

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon on the 3rd of November,
Pomona-Pitzer hosted the Sagehen Invitational and placed 3rd
of 8 teams. All teams put in a good showing, with many
fast swims and close races. Several lifetime best
times were recorded by the Hens: Jenny Marble with a
1:08.5 in the 100 Back and a 4:55.85 in the 400 IM, and
Jacquie Cole with a 2:21.79 in the 200 IM. The Hens
also had first place finishes in the 400 and 800 Free
Relays, the 400 Medley Relay, and Lucy Keller's 200 and 500
Free races.

The Sagehen men did not have many individuals take part in
the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational meet as the majority of the team was competing for the
Water Polo program at the same time as the meet. The
Hens were able to enter a 400 Free Relay team upon returning
from their water polo contest and won the event by over 10
seconds with a time of 3:23.32.
