Pomona-Pitzer defeated rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on a
rain soaked Merritt Field on the afternoon of the 9th by the
score of 12-7. The rain never ceased, and neither did
the turnovers, as the two teams combined for 11 on the day,
with 8 going against the Stags. The weather was the
main story and dictated play as the two teams also combined
for well over 20 mishandled snaps on the day. The
Sagehens got all of their points in the first half and then
held on for the victory as the field became covered with
puddles. There were only 2 pass completions in the
entire game as both teams opted to primarily run the ball up
the middle and hope for the best.
Offensively for the Hens, John Samples got the majority of
the workload as he rushed 32 times for 146 yards and 2
touchdowns. On the Hens' second possession of the day,
Samples broke loose for a 68 yard scamper for the first
score of the game. Samples' 2nd touchdown run came in
the 2nd period on a 2 yard surge through the line.
Quarterback Justin Fenchel completed just one pass on the
day, that being a 44 yarder to Matthew Hermsen. Time
of possession was nearly even on the afternoon with a slight
edge going to CMS.
Defensively, Matthew Waldeck led the Hen effort with 9 total
tackles and an interception. Bobby Boeche had a great
game with 8 tackles of his own. Also picking off
passes for the Hens were Keegan Dresow, Joseph Cappola, and
Shea Joaquim.

in with strong wins for the Sagehen squad were Alex Jakle in
the 200 Free and 100 Backstroke, Andy Vonasch in the 200
Individual Medley and 100 Breaststroke, and Steve Hooper in
the 500 Free.
Sophomore springboard diver David Bates scored two
second place finishes to lead Pomona-Pitzer to a 4th place
finish at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. Coach Gary
Troyer noted that, "David is diving at a very solid level
for this early in the season. He has added some new
dives with higher degrees of difficulty to increase his
effectiveness this season." Two freshmen came up with
excellent early season marks to add to the Hen point total.
Both of Alex Jakle's backstroke marks of 57.35 and 2:06.6
scored in the top three places and Andrew Vonasch cruised to
a 2:20.5 in the 200 breast to take third. "We got very
solid swims from the entire team. Adam Demaray and
Robert Wertheimer had good swims in the breaststroke and
individual medley while Steve Hooper turned in encouraging
times in the middle distance events. This is a good
start for a very young team," Troyer said.
