Men's Basketball 9-16

Pomona-Pitzer lit up the scoreboard on the 27th in their
last game of the 2002-2003 season, winning at home over
Redlands 103-78. Six different Sagehens tallied double
figures on the night, led by frosh Thomas Hollo and his game
high 27 points on 12 of 17 shooting from the floor.
Hollo also had a game high 9 rebounds for Pomona-Pitzer.
The Hens shot over 50 % from the floor on the night while
holding the visiting Redlands squad to just 30%. Jason
Howie scored 11 points in playing his final game for the
Hens. The Sagehens fell at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the
night of the 24th, 61-40. The 40 points for Pomona-Pitzer
was a season low offensively as only frosh Ed Wexler-Beron
tallied double digits with 10. Jason Howie shared team
high honors in boards, pulling down 7 on the night.
Kamau Norman-Terrance also grabbed 7 rebounds for the Hens.
The Sagehens struggled from the field on the night, shooting
just 23 % from the floor, and 9 % from beyond the 3 point
arc on 2 of 22.

Women's Basketball 6-18

Pomona-Pitzer closed out the 2002-2003 season with back to
back wins on the 26th and 27th of February. On the
26th, the Hens defeated Caltech at home, 81-34 and on the
27th, Pomona-Pitzer defeated out of conference opponent La
Sierra, 73-50. Tamara Zakim had game highs in points
both nights, tallying 20 and 23, respectively. Lindsay
Hill had a game high 12 boards against Caltech and against
La Sierra, Zakim and Hill shared game high honors with 13
boards apiece.
Pomona-Pitzer lost at Whittier on the night of the 24th,
68-52. Tamara Zakim had a team high 18 point, 5
rebound effort and Betty Chernack chipped in with 11 points,
but it wasn't enough to overcome the Poet squad.
The Hens shot 44 % from the field, better than the 41 % from
Whittier, but the Poets grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and
had many more opportunities to put the ball in the bucket.
Whittier also made 15 more trips to the free throw line than
did the Hens.

Pomona-Pitzer dropped 3 Sunwest Tournament contests on the
7th and 8th. On Friday the 7th, C.S. Hayward defeated
the Hens by the score of 13-0. Leanne Stein and
Courtney Buchanon each had 2 hits on the day. Alex
Schaible and Marni Scotten shared pitching duties for the
Hens. On Saturday, the Hens lost to Notre Dame (CA),
12-0, and again to C.S. Hayward, 10-0. Against Notre
Dame, Courtney Buchanon, Jameela Hammond, and Monica Belli
all had hits for the Sagehen squad. Scotten and
Schaible again split time on the mound for the Hens.
In the afternoon game against Hayward, 3 different players
had hits for the Hens. Emily Helliesen had 2, while
Jameela Hammond, Miranda Martin and Chelsea Simms all had
one hit apiece. Monica Belli and Scotten each got time
on the mound for Pomona-Pitzer.
The Sagehens lost 3 games to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps over the
weekend of February 28th and March 1st. The Athenas
won the 3 games by scores of 17-0, 4-1, and 8-0. In
game 1 on Friday, the Hens surrendered 20 hits in 5 innings
as the Athenas got off to an early lead and pulled away.
Leanne Stein and Emily Helliesen had hits for the Hen squad.
Marni Scotten came in to pitch in relief and gave up just 1
hit in 2 and a third innings of work. Game 2 of the
series was much closer and the Hens were within 2 runs going
into the 6th inning. Leanne Stein, Traci Kutaka, and
Stephanie Lozana all had hits for the Hens. Stein
drove in the lone run for Pomona-Pitzer. Alex Schaible
pitched in relief for the Hens for her first appearance of
the year and allowed just 1 earned run on 3 hits in 2.2
innings. In the last game of the series, the Hens
produced 4 hits but no runs in the 8-0 setback. A 5
run 5th inning allowed the Athenas to pull away.
Jameela Hammond was 2 for 2 from the plate for the Hens.
Kutaka, Scotten, and Schaible all split time on the mound
for the Sagehens.

On the weekend of March 7th and 8th, the Sagehens took a
much needed 2 out of 3 from current SCIAC leader Cal
Lutheran. The Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran struck first on
Friday with a 14-13 win that saw the Hens come from 9-4
behind and even take a 13-11 lead in the top of the 8th.
The two teams combined for 31 hits in the game and each team
had 2 errors. Brad Carmody and Felipe Aguilar each had
3 hits on the day. Aguilar and Sam Whitehead each went
deep for Pomona-Pitzer.
On Saturday, the Hens needed to sweep the double header and
did just that in convincing fashion. Game 1 saw the
Hens explode for 12 runs on 11 hits. The Hens put up
10 runs in the first 3 innings including a 6 spot to open
the game in the bottom of the first. Brad Carmody
continued his great season at the plate with a 3 hit
performance that included 2 home runs, 4 RBI's and 3 runs
scored. Josh Cardwell got the win for the Hens,
pitching 7 innings while scattering 9 hits and striking out
3. In the 2nd game of the day, Pomona-Pitzer had 19
hits in outscoring the Kingsmen 11-4. Bobby Boeche and
Felipe Aguilar each had a 3-hit day for the Hens while Jose
Cortez and Jonas Swyer had 2 hits apiece with a home run.
Mike Renery pitched a great game for the Hen squad, going 8
innings in getting the win, allowing just 5 hits, 2 earned
runs, while striking out 9 batters and walking just 3.
On March 4th, Pomona-Pitzer fell to visiting Keen College
(NJ), 3-1. The Hens were held to just 5 hits on the
day and the lone run came from a sacrifice off the bat of
Rob Ruiz. Six different pitchers took the mound for
the Hens, allowing the opposition just 4 hits on the
afternoon, but the hits were timely as Keen tallied single
runs in the 2nd , 5th, and 7th innings. Sam Whitehead
scored the only run for the Hen squad.
Pomona-Pitzer took 3 games from La Verne on the 28th of
February and the 1st of March. Game 1 on Friday the
28th saw the Hens hit 4 home runs, with two of them
coming off the bat of Jose Cortez. Rob Ruiz and Jase
Turner provided the other 2 long balls as the Hens won 10-8
in a game shortened due to darkness. Adam Gardner got
the win for the Hens, pitching 5 innings and giving up 6
hits while striking out 5. Alex Smith pitched 1 and a
third innings for the save. In game 2 of the series,
the Hens had to go to extra innings to claim the 11-6 win.
Pomona-Pitzer tallied one run in the top of the 9th to get
the game to extra frames and then exploded for 5 in the top
of the 12th to pull away. Jose Cortez and Brad Carmody
each had 3 hits for the Hens and Alex Smith pitched 5
innings for the win. Game 3 saw the Hens get out to an
early 8-0 lead after 3 innings and then just cruise to
victory. Jase Turner had 3 doubles in the game while
Matt Levinson and Jose Cortez each went deep for Pomona-Pitzer.
Mike Renery got the win for the Hens, pitching 7 strong
innings, allowing just 5 hits and striking out an impressive
10 batters in the game.

Men's Tennis

The Sagehens lost a nailbiter to 8th ranked Mary Washington
on the 10th, 4-3. Pomona-Pitzer lost the doubles point
despite a dominating win by the #1 doubles tandem of J.R.
Hall and David Frankel. In singles action, Frankel,
Hall, and Samir Vora all played great tennis in winning
their matches. Vora was extended to a third set before
claiming the win. Mary Washington won at #'s 4 thru 6
to seal the team victory.
Pomona-Pitzer played a double header on Saturday the 8th
and defeated both Southwestern and Brandeis. The Hens
swept the 3 doubles matches, dropping no more than 3 games
in any of the 3 matches. The Hens went on to easily
run away with the win by winning in straight sets at #'s 1
thru 5. David Frankel, J.R. Hall, and Jamie Frank all
won by identical scores of 6-1, 6-2 at #'s 1, 2, and 4,
respectively. Against Brandeis, the Hens won all 9
matches played, sweeping their way to a 7-0 win. J.R.
Hall and Samir Vora had great matches at #'s 2 and 3, both
winning by the score of 6-2, 6-1.
The Sagehens had two SCIAC wins on the 28th of February and
1st of March, defeating both Occidental and Whittier 7-0.
Against Occidental, the #1 doubles team of J.R. Hall and
David Frankel did not drop a game, winning 8-0. Nate
Pealer and J.B. Wogan found the same success at the #3
doubles spot. Hall won at the #1 spot 6-0, 6-3 and
Mike Benaroya won his first singles match of the season,
claiming a 6-0, 6-1 win at the #6 spot. Against
Whittier on the 1st, Samir Vora and Benaroya teamed up to
win at the #1 doubles position, 8-4. Vora then went on
to win at #1 singles 6-2, 6-2. George Bartle got his
first college win at the #6 spot, winning 6-0, 6-3.
Pealer did not drop a game in his match at the #4 position.

Women's Tennis

The Sagehens won 3 close matches in a row on March 5th, 7th,
and 9th. The scores for all 3 matches were 5-4 and
came against Washington University, Hardin-Simmons, and
Gustavus Adolphus. Against Washington, the Hens swept
the 3 doubles matches and claimed wins at #'s 2 and 3 for
the 5-4 triumph. Matches were tied at 4-4 with Whitney
Henderson still on court in the #2 spot, and Henderson came
through with a flawless 6-0 third set to seal the team win.
Betsy Mork was the other singles winner for the Hens at #3,
winning easily, 6-1, 6-0.
The Hens had to take a different path in defeating Hardin
Simmons on the 7th as the visiting team took 2 of 3 doubles
matches from the Hens. Pomona-Pitzer then won at #'s
1-4 to take the team match. Kelli Howard was
impressive at #1, winning 6-3, 6-1. The other wins
came from Whitney Henderson at #2, Betsy Mork at #3, and
Vicki Chen in the #4 position.
On Sunday the 9th, the Hens faced another tough opponent in
Gustavus Adolphus and again came away with a tough 5-4
victory. In doubles action, the Hens won at #'s 1 and
3. Needing just a split of the 6 singles matches, the
Hens got just that as the three wins came from Kelli Howard
at #1, Whitney Henderson at #2, and Kelsey Chance at the #5
spot with a tough 3 setter.The Hens had little trouble in defeating Whittier at home on
the 1st of March, 9-0. Kelli Howard was the only Hen
player tested on the day, winning 6-3, 7-6 at the #1 singles
position. Whitney Henderson, playing at the #2 spot,
did not drop a game in her match. Vicki Chen and
Kelsey Chance won 8-0 playing together in the #3 doubles
slot.

Women's Track & Field

Four all-time marks were posted by the women's track and
field team Saturday at the CSU Fullerton Benny Brown
Invitational.
Sophomore distance runner Ann Prouty clocked 4:51.81 in
finishing second in her 1500m heat. That time is the #7
all-time mark in Pomona-Pitzer history in that event. Frosh
Amy Rapp ran 10:43.10 in the 3000m to record the #9 all-time
PP mark. Frosh Nika Strzelecka ran 19:04.3 in the 5000m for
the #8 all-time PP mark. And sophomore Raketa Ouedraogo
tossed the hammer 135'11 for the #4 all-time PP mark.
The Sagehens travel to Whittier this weekend to compete
in a SCIAC conference 4-way meet. The Sagehens, currently
1-1 in SCIAC, face Claremont-M-S and Redlands
Pomona-Pitzer's women's track and field team split two SCIAC
contests Saturday at home on Strehle Track. The Sagehens
downed Caltech, 110-75, but fell to La Verne, 111-83, in the
conference meet.
Event winners for Pomona-Pitzer included
Stefanie McDougall in the 800 (2:23.94), Ann Prouty in the
1500 (4:54.50), and Raketa Ouedraogo in the hammer (128'11).
Other strong marks included Gre'Juana Dennis in the long
jump (17'8 3/4, which is the #3 mark all-time for Pomona-Pitzer),
Alex Wakeman in the pole vault (9'0, which equals the #2
mark all-time for P-P).

Pomona-Pitzer sent a third of the team
to Fullerton on the 8th and had some nice performances.
Mike Kirtman had a season best 110 High Hurdle with a 15.98.
Joey Cappola did the same with his 57.45 400 Intermediate
Hurdle run and David Buxton had two great runs, coming
across in 50.98 in the 400 and in a 50.0 anchor to the 1600
relay. Alex Head came within a foot of his all time
personal record in the javelin by throwing 163'10" and Matt
Zay jumped 43'4" in the triple jump.
The Sagehens hosted a SCIAC 4-way meet
on the 1st March and came away with a 1-1 record, defeating
Caltech and falling to La Verne. Coach Mulcahy noted,
"Across the board we performed better than we have and
indicated the kind of potential we have. It started with a
1-2 over Cal Tech in the long jump with Matt Zay and Chris
Snipes getting seasonal PRs. Chris also got us points in
the hammer, discus and shot. Matt came back in the triple
jump to tie his lifetime best and finish 2nd over all. Ty
Bundgaard returned to form with a 6’4 high jump. He teamed
with Mark Melief to go 1-2 against Caltech. Mark also jumped
12’ in the vault to get the win against Cal Tech."
On the track, the Hens went 1-2 against
Cal Tech in all but one running events. A great start was
provided by Braden Boice, coming back from illness, and Danny Shickich, going 1-2 against Cal Tech in the steeplechase.
Notable marks were Crosby Freeman’s 15.26 5000, Joey
Cappola’s 57.68 400 IH. Both marks were season bests.

Pomona-Pitzer fell to La Verne at Goose Creek on March 6th
by the score of 312-298. The Hens' top two performers
were Joe Gill and Scott Pearsall, who came in with 76's on
the day. Ben Hochstein came in with a 79 and Dylan
Ross was 2 strokes back with an 81 for his round. On Thursday February 27, Pomona-Pitzer was defeated by
Redlands in soggy conditions, scoring a team total of 309,
or 21 over par. The match, which was previously rained out,
was played at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills.
Redlands, one of the best teams in the region, scored a team
total of 286 or two under par. Scott Pearsall led the
Hen squad with a 3 over 75 while Ben Hochstein, Ben
Nightengale, and Greg Woulfe all had 6 over 78's.

Women's Water Polo

Pomona-Pitzer defeated Michigan State on the 5th of March,
14-6. The Hens went into halftime with an 8-4 lead and
tallied 6 goals in the final quarter to pull away with the
win. Lucia Schmit led the Hens offensively with 5
goals and Joy Haviland had a great game as well, finding the
back of the net 4 times. Lindsay Norcott scored twice
for the Hen squad. Morgan Sokolow had an impressive 11
saves between the netposts and Blair Henderson had a solid
defensive showing with 4 steals in the game.
The Hen Water Polo squad played 3 tough contests to open the
2003 season and fell in all three. The Hens played two
games on the 1st of March against Arizona State and Cal
State Bernardino. The closest game came against
Arizona State, where the Hens fell 8-7. Joy Haviland
scored 4 of the Hens' 7 goals in the game. Morgan
Sokolow stopped 13 shots in net. Against C.S.S.B., the
Hens fell by the score of 11-5. Haviland and Lara
Krusha each found the back of the net two times for the
Hens. Sokolow came up with 8 saves in net. On
March 2nd, the Hens traveled to Irvine to take on the
Anteaters of U.C. Irvine and fell to the home team, 9-3.
Pomona-Pitzer went into halftime up 3-2.
Haviland scored twice and Lucia Schmit tallied one goal for
the Hens. Sokolow made 11 saves and had 4 steals for
the Hens.
